API Tennessee believes that every student that calls Tennessee home has a right to public education. This legislative session, there are two bills that directly challenge that right.
This bill is back from last year and it gives school districts the ability to refuse to enroll undocumented students. This a direct challenge to Plyler v. Doe, the longstanding Supreme Court ruling that guarantees the right to public education to all students regardless of their immigrant status.
This bill would require public schools to track the immigration status of all students. This diverts time and resources from schools being able to create safe and welcoming spaces for student learning.
Here's what you can do
API Tennessee is part of a Education for All Tennessee, a group of organizations protecting access to K-12 public education for every child in the United States, no matter their immigration status. Follow them and check out their two ways to act.
